Furney’s 2017 pirate-focused work Black Hearts White Bones is an action-packed work of historical fiction focusing on the two most famous of female pirates, Anne Bonny & Mary Read. The narrative features female lead, Peg Brennan, an alias of the escaped Anne Bonny, who has a bastard son in Bath, North Carolina, while a vengeful Mary Read who escaped prison in Jamaica nine years prior has a debt to settle. Arriving into Charles Town, South Carolina, she seeks revenge for being left to die in prison.
