From the Galley: Pirate Sliders

Ahoy, mateys! Today I’m bringin’ ye a wee sandwich recipe that our crew often makes for pirate soirees. Ye know, the kind where you have food in one hand and a cup of grog in the other.

Pirate Sliders (aka Cuban Sliders)

Cuban Sliders | The Girl Who Ate Everything

This recipe is simple and OH SO delicious! We do this in layers: First, you need some rolls, (we use Hawaiian rolls). Then, you need some ham, (you can do this the hard way and roast a pig on the beach; or, you can visit your local..erm…pirate deli and get some sliced ham…much easier!). Then, you can use Swiss cheese, but if you’re a real pirate, yer gonna want Havarti. Finally, yer gonna need to send someone to market and get some crisp dill pickles. For the top of the little sammy, you’re gonna gently brush some butter and Dijon mustard glaze. (Some pirates also add some onion, but not this one.)

If yer havin’ a pirate party, use the following recipe. If’n yer just makin’ dinner for your closest pirate buddies, cut the recipe in half. The RECIPE, NOT your pirate buds!

Ingredients

  • 24 sweet Hawaiian rolls
  • 1.25 lbs thinly sliced deli ham
  • 12 ounces sliced Swiss cheese
  • 24 dill pickle slices

Glaze:

  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons finely minced white onion (I don’t add the onions)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • Preheat oven to 350 and grease two 9×13 baking dishes. Cut each package of rolls horizontally in half and place bottom half of the rolls in each baking dish. Layer the ham, cheese, and pickles and top with remaining top rolls.
  • Whisk together glaze and brush the top of the rolls with it. Cover and bake 10 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 5-10 minutes or until rolls are golden brown. Cut into sliders and serve.
You can roast your ham or swagger on down to the deli and get it already sliced!

Until our next plunder, keep yer galley warm, yer spices close, and yer sails pointed toward adventure.

Bootstrap Ginny, signing off — may yer days be sweet and yer seas calm.

Mates, I found this recipe on 30 Easy Caribbean Recipes – Insanely Good.

Bootstrap Ginny raises her tankard! Huzzah!

To the ghosts that guide us, the storms that test us, and the gold that waits for those who dare — may our ink never run dry and our courage never fade. Raise your tankards, mates… for the sea still remembers our names.
